Letter to your MP - John Redwood

Dear Mr Redwood

We your constituents are writing to explain why we care about Heathrow Airport and want to ensure that it is made bigger and better so that it is equipped for the future.

The case for expanding Heathrow is clear: it is the UK’s only hub airport, connecting millions of passengers from across the country and enabling them to access long-haul flights to the rest of the world. Heathrow is also the biggest single-site employer and the largest port by value of goods in the UK.

But Heathrow is nearly at full capacity and without expansion we risk falling behind our competitors in Europe, sending out the message that the UK is closed to new business. The long-term decline which would follow would be a disaster, particularly for young people in Wokingham who want to build their careers and lives around Heathrow. An extra runway would provide job security for 76,000 people, new jobs for a further 77,000 and boost the UK economy by a massive £211 billion.

The airport is of enormous benefit to residents in Wokingham. Be it travelling for business, leisure or the thousands of local jobs that the airport creates, our community has a strong relationship with Heathrow and we hope it continues.

Whilst there is a minority who object to airport expansion, we urge you to back a bigger and better Heathrow and then hold the airport to account over its commitments to reducing noise through quieter aircraft, steeper approaches and improved public transport access.

We have an opportunity to create jobs and to secure the future of a major economic asset. We simply must not squander this opportunity. That is why we are asking you to secure the jobs our community needs by backing the Airports Commission’s unanimous recommendation that Heathrow should be expanded.

Best wishes,
